Orest Kinasevych is a digital media and publishing technologies instructor and consultant. He currently holds a faculty position in the Creative Arts department at Red River College in Winnipeg, Canada.
Prior to his association with Red River College, Orest worked as a publishing technologies consultant to clients in publishing, pharmaceutical, travel information and financial industries across the U.S., Europe and Asia. He was based out of the New York City area between 1992 and 2003. Some of his clients can be found listed in the Fortune 500, FT Global 500, and S&P 500.
Orest holds a degree from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba (BES, 1985). He also holds a diploma in Advertising Art from Red River College (1987). He is currently working toward an M.A. in Education through Central Michigan University (2010).
Orest has served on the Board of the SGML Forum of New York and has spoken to audiences at Seybold Seminars and elsewhere. He has also volunteered his skills to Literacy Volunteers of America, the YWCA Bergen County Rape Crisis Center, and Plast Ukrainian Youth Association. More recently, Orest worked as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Winnipeg.
Highlights
Early in his career, Orest managed the design and production of successful targeted publications such as the Easy Gourmet cookbook series for Canada Safeway Ltd.
When he first moved to the New York City area, Orest provided his expertise in digital media and publishing to companies such as American Express at the World Financial Center, Union Bank of Switzerland and for Salomon Brothers (Citibank) at the World Trade Center.
Starting in 1994, Orest was instrumental in launching some of the earliest travel-oriented web sites while working for the travel trade division of the Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier Group plc. These sites included OAG.com, HTI Online, M&C Online, Official Cruise Guide, and others. In 1997, Orest led the launch of TW Crossroads (now TravelWeekly.com), the online version of travel industry newspaper Travel Weekly.
Orest later assisted with Y2K remediation planning and management at the corporate headquarters for Schering-Plough Corp. There he also provided key guidance and development of functionality in the company-wide document management system running on Documentum.
In 2002-3, Orest applied his information design and development expertise to the re-launch of LasVegas.com, a joint venture of Mandalay Resort Group, Caesar’s Entertainment, and Stephens Media Group. In 2007 he acted as data and information design consultant for RoadTrip Wizard, a Travelocity product developed by Leisure Logix.
Since 2004, Orest has been an instructor at Red River College, teaching courses in e-commerce and web site design, development, and accessibility. He is Vice Chair of the Teaching/Learning Technology Roundtable at the College. He served as technical advisor to the web site redesign for the Red River College student newspaper, The Projector.
Personal
Orest is a native Winnipegger — raised in Winnipeg’s historic North End. He enjoys running and cycling and has completed four marathons, including the 2001 New York City Marathon. He’s an accomplished photographer with works in private and public collections, including the Canadian Museum of Civilization. He’s a film buff, and he enjoys travel, listening to traditional jazz, and tending his freshwater aquarium.
